7 May 2008: Grasshoppers 4:0 Pembury May 9, 2008

It was great going into this game knowing that we had already done enough to win the league.  In the end it turned into a bit of a procession, as

East Hoathly didn’t manage to win either of their last two games, leaving us 5 points clear plus a goal difference which was worth another point.  So we had this game against Pembury to make it our year by 8 points.  It was also a chance for the players to celebrate their achievement and put on a performance for the supporters who were once again out in force.  It was a bit off-putting to see two of the Pembury players taller than Keith, but their wives and kids told us that they were both 12, so I guess they must be.

We were really struggling for players for this game.  Max was out injured thanks to his brother’s bloodthirsty challenge in the FA Cup final in their garden.  Apparently the Grasshoppers were 3-2 up on Man United when Toby went right over the top and the ensuing riot and pitch invasion by Phil, Millie and Katie forced the referee to abandon the game.  Tom was also unavailable, apparently preferring to play for another team in some tinpot competition in

Brighton, which left us with the bare 11.  Or it would have done if Miles’ mum been able to follow the simplest of directions.  She was obviously too busy doing her make-up in the rear view mirror to see that everyone else had turned off the main road.  Still, no harm done.  After a quick visit to

Lakeside, Miles was back in time for kick off and Keith’s blood pressure reduced back down to stratospheric.  In terms of the lineup, Mike went to the right side of midfield, Nick went to right back, Harry dropped into the middle of the defence and Connor played in midfield.  These enforced changes could easily have unsettled the team, but the guys all focused well and took them in their stride.

This was a tricky game, played on a disgrace of a pitch against opponents who we had beaten by the narrowest of margins at our earlier meeting.  We were down to a squad of 12, with Michael being very unlucky to be named as sub, but the guys were lifted by the sight of

Taylor standing on the touchline cheering them on.

This was another close game between the two best teams in the division.  The game drew a crowd which would have flattered a lot of professional teams, including most of the Uckfield U16 squad, who turned out in force to repay Cian’s unfailing support of them throughout the season.  We went into the game knowing that a win would all but guarantee the league title.

Back to our regular day and just the one game against Crowborough, who normally put out good teams at every age group.

19 Apr 2008: Grasshoppers 3:1 Langton Green

We had a quick break and then it was straight into the second game.  This time Cian won the toss and elected to kick downhill in the first half.  This strategy worked well, as we went into a 2-0 lead at half time, with Robert scoring the pick of the goals, a cracker from just outside the box.  Cian was injured in setting the goal up and came off for most of the second half, during which Langton Green put us under some serious pressure and scored a great goal themselves which gave Danny no chance.  At 2-1, things were looking a bit shaky, until Keith brought back his captain and Cian almost immediately settled the nerves with a cool finish in a one on one with the keeper.

We went to Langton Green for this double header without Miles, who had broken his knee and is likely to be out for months.  I’m not sure why the games were scheduled for their pitch, which was rubbish, rather than our much flatter stadium, but we took the disadvantage in our stride, as we did having to wear red bibs due to a colour clash.

Again, I wasn’t at this match, but as you can see from the scoreline, it was pretty one sided.  I’m told that Connor scored 7 goals, which is an achievement against any team.  I hear Danny came out of goal and also got a few.  Keith hasn’t given me a MoM name and it would be unfair of me to pick one without having been there.  I can of course still give the CRAP award to Oskar for letting Connor score more goals than him!

I wasn’t actually at this match, so I can’t report other than as I’ve heard from various sources.  It sounds as though the game was very similar to the last game between the two teams, except this time we held our nerve, finished our chances and defended better.

9 Mar 2008: Tenterden 4:4 Grasshoppers March 11, 2008

This was our first setback since the first day of the season, though we were not helped by not arriving at the ground until 10 minutes before kick off.  Tenterden is further than most of us go on our holidays, so what on earth they are doing in our league is beyond me.  That’s not to say they were anything other than gracious hosts, it’s just that the ground was well hidden and Mrs McLeod would have preferred a ladies loo to having to share with Goggy.  To be fair, she seemed unfazed, but Goggy had terrible trouble going.
